How to Play Classic Solitaire

Classic Solitaire is a timeless single-player card game that challenges you to organize cards into foundation piles. This game, often referred to as Klondike Solitaire, is just one of the many variations available, including Spider Solitaire, FreeCell, and Pyramid. Known historically as "Patience," Solitaire tests both your strategy and focus as you work toward victory.

The goal of Solitaire is to arrange all cards into four foundation piles, organized by suit and in ascending order from Ace to King. To achieve this, you will need to strategically move cards between the tableau, stockpile, and waste pile, unlocking hidden cards and creating sequences.

Solitaire Setup

Solitaire involves four types of card piles to set up the game:

The tableau: The main play area, consisting of seven columns. The first column has one card, the second column has two, and so on, up to the seventh column with seven cards. The top card in each column is face-up, while the rest remain face-down.

The stockpile: The remaining 24 cards are placed face-down as the stockpile. These cards can be drawn as needed when no more moves are available on the tableau.

The waste pile: Cards drawn from the stockpile that cannot be immediately played are moved face-up into the waste pile. These cards can be used in subsequent moves.

The foundation piles: The four piles you build during gameplay. Each foundation is specific to one suit, and cards are stacked in ascending order from Ace to King.

Solitaire Rules

Play Solitaire by following these core rules:

Move face-up cards only: You can play face-up cards from the tableau or the waste pile.

Revealing face-down cards from the tableau requires clearing the face-up cards above them.

Alternate colors: In the tableau, move cards to create sequences with alternating red and black suits, and descending ranks. For example, place a 6 of Spades on a 7 of Hearts.

Build sequences: Move entire groups of sequenced cards if the highest-ranking card fits onto another tableau column.

Reveal hidden cards: Clearing face-up cards uncovers face-down cards, adding them to your available moves.

Build foundation piles: Start each foundation pile with an Ace and continue adding cards in ascending order of the same suit.

Use empty columns for Kings: Only Kings or a sequenced group starting with a King can be placed in empty tableau columns.

Draw from the stockpile: Flip cards from the stockpile when you can not make further moves on the tableau.

Redeal the stockpile: Once the stockpile is empty, turn over the waste pile to create a new stockpile and continue the game.

Strategies to Win Solitaire

Boost your chances of winning Solitaire by applying these strategies:

Prioritize uncovering hidden cards: Revealing face-down cards increases your options and helps you make progress.

Examine your options before making a move: Review the tableau and stockpile carefully before committing to a play.

Move Aces and 2s to the foundation early: This clears space on the tableau and starts building your foundation piles.

Target larger tableau columns first: Focus on clearing columns with the most face-down cards to unlock key moves.

Hold off on foundation moves when possible: Use tableau cards to build sequences and unlock hidden cards before transferring them to the foundation piles.

Clear tableau columns for Kings: Freeing up columns for Kings or King-led sequences increases your flexibility.
